Paterson’s Glorious History: Silk Mills and Manufacturing, Cultures, Emigrant Communities, etc. We will explore Paterson’s Glorious History and even ask, ‘Was Paterson’s history really glorious?’ What made Paterson the manufacturing powerhouse that it was? Can it be glorious again? Meeting at the Paterson Museum at 9:00 AM (2 Market Street, Paterson, NJ)

Health and Human Services: A Tour and visit of Paterson’s major hospital and discussions with social services agencies on the community needs and their services. Are they duplicating services? Working together? Where do they need help? Paterson and Charity Care.

Business and Economic Climate in the City of Paterson: Includes a visit of many large and small businesses in the City of Paterson and a lesson on the major business districts of the City. Talk candidly to employers and business owners about their concerns for the survival of their businesses, as well as the incentives and attributes of doing business in Paterson. Are businesses satisfied with city services rendered for their taxes? This seminar includes a panel discussion with community business leaders and government directors who impact businesses with their programs and incentives.

Education: An In-depth look at the education system in the City of Paterson. Will involve a visit to high-achieving and low-achieving schools in the district, a discussion with the Superintendent of Schools, as well as members of the Board of Education. Are we doing right by the children and community stakeholders? What needs improvement? How can we become pro-active and involved in making a difference?

The Media and How Paterson is Covered: Includes a visit to The Herald News and an open discussion with their community editor. How do they gauge what is newsworthy? Over the past year, they have added another Paterson beat reporter. Are these reporters getting to the juice of the City’s good news as well as concerning news? We’ll learn how the community can get event information to the appropriate person.

The Environment: Discussing the challenges of “Dirty Land” in the City of Paterson. Session lead by two local environmental leaders. Will present a hypothetical town meeting presenting a development on a controversial land mass. How would you react? Would you support it? Oppose it? We will explore the purpose of the Dept. of Environmental Protection for the State of NJ.

Housing: Warehousing families in large high-rise and crowded housing complexes is no longer an option. The Director of the Housing Authority will host the group on tours of the public housing complexes, and the services provided. She will also discuss the current plans to demolish the Alexander Hamilton Projects, and what the plan is for replacement. We will explore how the housing of lower income and no-income families is changing/improving. What still needs to be done?

Government And Politics: A visit with local politicians including the Mayor, City Council President, Freeholder Director, Assemblyman or woman, and a discussion lead by the Chair of the Joint Governmental Affairs Committee. How does Government function in Paterson? What are the major issues of the time, and how can our voices be heard?

Crime and Its Costs: Includes a Tour of Northern State Prison, an open discussion with the Paterson Police Chief, Gang Unit Detective, Narcotics division, and County Prosecutor. How are we doing? Are Paterson’s children lost? Quality of life issues and petty crimes will also be addressed.

Faith Based Initiates: Faith-based groups are working hard to serve the communities in Paterson. This seminar includes visits and discussions with faith-based leaders in their facilities, as well as faith based community development corporations. This will also include a small charitable project to be done during the seminar by participants.
